It was under Dutch rule for a while, and it is said that Manhattan was bought for $24 worth of glass beads.

In 1664 it came under English rule after the terms of surrender permitted the Dutch to remain in the colony and allowed for religious freedom.

New York grew as a trading port as part of the colony of New York. With it being a good port, it was a center of slavery. There was 42%, of households enslaved Africans by 1730.

In 1898, the modern City of New York was formed with the consolidation of Brooklyn, parts of the Bronx, and the western part of Queens. These all became what NYC is today.
