This airport was the main airport for the area until 1974 when the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) came online. Well, it is still around.

History
It came to be in 1917 when the Army announced it would establish some cams to train pilots. This came up due to the United States entering World I
In 1928 Dallas bought it and opened it for civilian use. The first flight was a National Air Transport company).
World War II came up and it was a civilian school detachment. In 1943 a new North to South runway was called 18/36 and northwest to southeast runway 13/31. However, at the end of the war, the air force facilities closed.
American Airlines Flight 157 coming from New York City to Mexico City slid off the runway and 28 people were killed.
In the jet age, they built a third terminal and it opened in 1958. It had the first moving walkway. The turbine-power flights began on April 1, 1959. President Kennedy landed there before he was assassinated at Dealey Plaza.
Southwest has its headquarters there.
I could go on, but that is what the Internet is for.
