History

Interesting story behind the Army’s creation. Benjamin F Stephenson was appointed a surgeon in the 14th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the civil war. Makes it all the up to Major. After the war, he thought about creating a national association of Union veterans. The name he came up with was the Grand Army of the Republic.

It is called the Stephenson Grand Army of the Republic Memorial. It was dedicated on July 3, 1909.
