I am not sure if you have ever wondered what the longest flight is on Earth right now. Well, I found it.
Longest Flight
When you are thinking bout the longest flight, what comes to mind? Like Sydney to New York? London to Sydney? Well, it is neither of those. Right now, it is from Singapore to New York. Landing at JFK, not Laguardia.
Singapore Airlines with flight numbers SQ23 and SQ24. Here is some information:
- Distance
- Approximately 8,288 nautical Miles
- Time in Air
- Roughly 18 hours and 40 min. Could extend pat 19 hours depending on the jet stream.
- The Aircraft used
- Airbus A350-900ULR (Ultra Long Range)
- Fun Fact
- No standard Economy class on this flight.
- Only premium Economy and Business class.
This is basically to keep the weight down.
You need to have the weight down in order to make this possible.
Flight Path
Once it takes off from Singapore, it heads East, leaving at 6 AM Singapore time on a Monday, you will arrive at 12:25 PM on the same Monday. Yep, you read that right. You will be arriving on the same day you left. Well, you are flying backward in time, and you will cross the International Date Line as well. Singapore is 12 hours ahead of New York.
Then, when you return to Singapore, you will continue flying east. So, if you leave at 6 AM on Tuesday, you will get there on Wednesday afternoon. So basically Tuesday evening exists, but it doesn’t.
Question is
Would you fly on this? I would love to fly on this flight. But that is almost 19 hours in the air. I mean, that is a long time in the air. What would you do? Well, you could sleep. Watch a crap load of TV or movies. I would probably work a bit on my laptop or my iPad. You know, working on my blogs and videos.
Another question: who flies the plane for that long? Don’t the pilots have a time-out? Like, they can only fly a certain amount of time? Yes, and this is well over the time frame they are allowed to fly. That is why they have 4 pilots on the plane for these flights. Yep, there are four pilots onboard. No, they don’t all fly at once. There is a crew rest area where they hang out.
I wonder if there are more flight attendants as well.
Thoughts
This sounds like a great flight to try. I would love to try this flight. It runs about SGD 6,921.40, or $5,433.66 USD. I thought it would be a lot more than that.
It would be interesting to be in the air that long. I wonder how my body would handle the flight. Wonder what I would do as well.
Interesting.
