Dole Plantation

James Dole, Pineapple King, developed the pineapple industry in Hawaii.

History

When it was started it was known as the Hawaiian Pineapple Company. It was later renamed Dole Food Company. Started out with just 9 acres of land. However, it grew and grew. In 1907, he brought up some ads to promote his canned pineapples.

In 1913 he invested in a machine that could peel 35 pineapples every minute. Before that, it would take a lot of workers a lot of time to do it by hand. I would hate to do that by hand.

Other companies saw what Dole was doing and decided to do the same thing, which made dole bring in foreign workers and pay them next to nothing. It drove the price of Dole Pineapple down and drove the others out of business.

Dole bought up land on Maui

His brother helped broker the deal with the Hawaiians to secure Hawaii as a territory of the United States. In a not-so-fair contract. They did the same thing the British did but the British gave it back to the Hawaiian people. The Americans also gave back to the Hawaiian people, but the Queen of Hawaii at the time wanted to put to death the people who tried to steal the land from the Hawaiians. But Congress said nope, you can’t do that.

  • Ice Cream
    • Dole Whip

Yes, we picked up some candy.
