If you’re serious about maximizing your international travel experience, Star Alliance isn’t just another loyalty program—it’s your passport to a seamless global network that spans every corner of the world. Whether you’re a road warrior racking up hundreds of thousands of miles annually or a savvy leisure traveler looking to stretch your points further, understanding how to leverage Star Alliance can transform the way you fly.
Introduction
Founded in 1997 as the world’s first airline alliance, Star Alliance revolutionized air travel by creating a unified network where passengers could earn and redeem miles across multiple carriers, enjoy reciprocal benefits, and access lounges worldwide regardless of which member airline they flew. Today, it remains the largest and most comprehensive airline alliance.
The numbers tell the story: 26 member airlines serving 1,290+ destinations across 195+ countries. This isn’t just breadth for breadth’s sake—it’s about having options. Need to get to a secondary city in Southeast Asia? Star Alliance has you covered. Planning a complex multi-continent itinerary? The routing possibilities are virtually endless

As with Oneworld, if you live in Canada, you should join the Air Canada Mileage Program.
However, with Lounge Access, you need to know a few things.
- You must be traveling on a Star Alliance carrier on the day you want to access the lounge
- Your boarding pass is your lounge ticket
- Most lounges allow one guest (a traveling Companion). However, it all depends on the airline you are flying on
- First Class Lounges are for First Class passengers only. Sorry, Gold status.
- If there is a 3rd party lounges, they may have more restrictive hours or amenities
Of course, you will have to do some research into the lounges on your own.
My Thoughts
While this is the best of the Alliances for airlines with 26 members, it covers most of the world. Unlike Oneworld, you can go to Africa and South America.
I didn’t get into the breakdown of the mileage programs or how to earn points. This could be a very long blog post if I did that.
But, if you are living near a hub for any one of these Airlines. Let’s take United. They have the following hubs.
- Chicago O’Hare
- Denver
- Huston
- Los Angels
- Newark
- San Francisco
- Washinton Dulles
It would be smart to join that airline’s mileage program and start earning miles and using the Star Alliance network.
It looks like a good Alliance to get started with.
It is all up to you.
