History

In 1776, two Franciscan friars from Spain followed a stream down a canyon known as Spanish Fork Canyon. They were seeking a shortcut from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to the Spanish missions in California. This is how Spanish Fork got its name.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints settled here in 1851 as they settled the Utah territory. This area was very beautiful and had enough water for two different settlements.

Icelandic pioneers arrived in 1855, making Spanish Fork the first permanent Icelandic settlement in the United States.

Then-President Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order. This order forced the Utes in the area to move to the Uintah Basin.
