22 Hours in the Clouds: Everything You Need to Know About Qantas Project Sunrise   Recently updated !

Last week, we talked about the longest flight from New York to Singapore. Now we are going to talk about the one flight that could break the record for the longest flight.

Project Sunrise

Now, this will be flying from Sydney, Australia, to either New York (JFK) or London.

This flight will be 9,100 nautical miles. Compared to the 8,288 nautical miles from NY to Singapore.

So this flight is a bit longer, at 18-19 hours. It is 22 hours in the air. Almost the whole day in the air. Now that is a long time in the air.

Let’s break down the flight.

They might do a Melbourne to London and New York as well.

The Plane

We have talked about the time and miles, but what about the plane? This plane will be an Airbus A380 with four engines.

Not really, this will be an A350-1000 Ultra Long Range (ULR). They are just finishing up the plane and should be delivered to Qantas by late 2026. Then they will be doing some proving flights. I mean, do they need to fly 22 hours or more? They need to make sure that the plane can make it that far.

They will also be training the crew for this long flight. I mean, yeah, they will have to get some training; it’s not just about flying the plane and handing out snacks.

Yes, there will be more than 1 of these planes. There could be up to 12 made for this project. There will be 3 to begin with

The Name

Project Sunrise is the name of the flight. The name is a nod to the “Double Sunrise” flights operated during WWII. The flight from Perth to London. This journey will span so many time zones that they will see two sunrises. Yes, two different sunrises. Now that would be cool to see two different sunrises.

Thoughts

Well, I would love to do this flight, I mean, go from New York to Sydney, then Sydney to London. That would be a great experience. Just not back-to-back. Maybe a couple of different times in my life. Like maybe a cruise from LA to Sydney, then fly to London and take a cruise to New York, then home. Then fly from SLC to New York, then to Sydney, and take a cruise to Tokyo, and fly back home.

Now that would be a great adventure.

Next Week

We will be discussing Salt Lake International Airport (Airside)
