As I write this post on July 31, 2024, the summer games are happening in Paris, France. Why am I writing this post? Well, that is a good question.
Olympic Games
The IOC committee was formed in 1894, and the first game was held in 1896. Those games were held in Olympia, Greece. Hence the name Olympic games. During the 20th and 21st centuries had some effects on the Olympic games.
Some of the changes made are
- Creation of Winter Games
- Snow and Ice sports
- Paralympic Games
- For athletes with disabilities
- Youth Olympic Games
- Athletes aged 14 to 18
- Continental Games
- Pan American
- African
- Asian
- European
- Pacific
- World Games
- Sports that aren’t contested in the Olympic Games.
The Olympic games used to be held the same year, making it a busy year once every four years.
Now, they are held in separate years for summer and winter
1992 was the last time the summer and winter games were held in the same year.
- Summer games
- Barcelona, Spain
- July 25 – Aug 9, 1992
- Barcelona, Spain
- Winter games
- Albertville
- Feb 8-23, 1992
- Albertville
In 1994, the Winter Games were held in Lillehammer in February.
1996, the summer games were held in Atlanta in July and August.
This made it better for the athletes and, I think, for the host cities.

2034 Games
They are headed to Salt Lake City, Utah. This will feature the great state of Utah. However, it is just under 10 years. What effects will this have on Utah? That is a good question. However, we have 114 months and 10 days to get you to know more about Utah.
Thoughts
Am I really happy about the games coming back to Utah? I have mixed feelings about the games—some are good, and some are bad. But the thing is that there will be lots of improvements to Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas, so that will be good. The bad thing is that taxes will go up—higher than now. Thanks, Biden.
Stay tuned to this blog over the next 9 years, 6 months, and 17 days to learn about Utah and what it offers the world.
