History
When the Mormon pioneers arrived in Manti in November, they encountered a severe winter. To cope, they dug temporary shelters into the side of the hill.
This is where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple was built.
There were several issues between the Mormon pioneers and the Native Americans.
- Wakra’s War
- Lots of Raids by the native Americans at the Mormon outposts in central and southern Utah
- This war ended in the mid-1850’s
- Saw a lot of baptisms of the Wakra tribe members
- Although the hostilities ended, the underlying issues were never resolved.
- Utah’s Black Hawk War
- Started in 1865
- An issue between a Manti resident and a young chieftain exploded into open warfare.
- Forts were built
- 1867, Chief Black Hawk made peace with the settlers
- Spotty violence still happened
- 1872 brought Federal Troops in, and most of the Utes were moved to Uintah and Quray Indian Reservations.
The Mormon Miracle Pageant was held in Manti for two weeks in June. It would bring in 15,000 people every night.
This ended in 2019, as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints moved from full-scale events to more focused on Family and home.
In the last few years, it brought in more law enforcement to police all the people protesting against the church.
